But he nailed it while also proving that Pixar had ambitions beyond anthropomorphized objects and animals. It was to be their first movie not directed by John Lasseter, who had made Pixar a household name with Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, and Toy Story 2, and thus the pressure was on for director Pete Docter to make something, well, great. It’s also important to note that Disney did not start releasing Marvel movies until 2012’s Marvel’s The Avengers, so films like Iron Man and Captain America: The First Avengerare technically Paramount Pictures movies and were thus ruled ineligible. So sit back and peruse our not-at-all controversial list in which we pinpointed the 30 best Disney movies of the century so far.Īn Important Note on Eligibility: For the purposes of keeping this list a “Disney” list, we excluded adult films that were produced by labels like Touchstone Pictures (sorry, Unbreakable) and co-productions through said labels (sorry, The Royal Tenenbaums). This includes Disney originals-both animated and live-action-as well as output from Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, and even a few underrated gems that we feel still haven’t gotten the recognition they deserve. So as we head into a new decade, we decided to look back and curate a list of the very best Disney movies of the 21st century so far. In truth, the films of the 21st century so far has largely been dominated by Disney in one way or another, and while that kind of domination isn’t always something worth blindly celebrating, the fact of the matter is Disney has produced some very, very good films over the last 20 years. This could explain the studio's commercial problems. But even before the 2010s, Disney was churning out terrific films-largely thanks to the acquisition of Pixar. By contrast, other studios are waiting months before making their movies available on Netflix or any other streaming service, encouraging families to see them in theaters. A family of four could see Elemental in theaters, which could cost a small fortune, or that family could just wait a couple of weeks and watch the movie in the comfort of their own home. Where there used to be a three-month gap between a movie leaving theaters and being available physically and digitally, Disney movies are now available on Disney+ just 45 days after their opening weekend, which is barely a couple of weeks after they exit theaters. It's only a matter of time before Disney movies are available on Disney+ too. However, regardless of quality, releasing animated Disney movies on Disney+ during the pandemic conditioned audiences into expecting that was the new standard. Pixar movies such as Soul, Luca, and Turning Red were all made available at no extra cost on the streamer, and Soul even won the Academy Award for Best Animated Picture in 2021. During the COVID-19 pandemic, a string of high-quality Pixar movies was released directly onto Disney+. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Minions: The Rise of Gru, and The Super Mario Movie were all huge hits at the box office, so there's a clear issue if a movie from the gold standard of animation is struggling. Though Elemental is recovering from its disastrous opening weekend, it's still too little to fully recover. Elemental had a $200 million budget, and taking into account the marketing budget and the movie theaters' cut, the movie will leave theaters massively in the red. Not only that, but a Disney movie making just $250 million and setting a new record is extremely worrying, as that's still a box office bomb. Given that Lightyear is a part of the Toy Story franchise and that it follows Toy Story 4, which made $1.073 billion, Lightyear should have been way more successful. However, while these seem like positives for Elemental, they only speak to a much bigger Disney problem. Elemental is also an original movie and not connected to an established franchise, unlike a movie such as Lightyear, which is part of a $4-billion-grossing series (via The Numbers). Firstly, Elemental had a terrible opening weekend, but it has impressively managed to hold strong at the box office, only dropping a small percentage each week. Elemental has grossed $253 million worldwide, and it'll soon beat Encanto's $256 million gross, which comes as a surprise for several reasons. Following Encanto, Elemental is the most recent Disney movie to be theatrically released, and it will soon outperform the animated Madrigal musical.
